In-Depth Analysis of Fromm Dog Food

Fromm Family Pet Food is an extremely mid-sized, local and family-owned operation located in Wisconsin, operating its own plants and dedicated to creating high-quality, consistent dog food that is created in clean, safe facilities and passes rigorous government regulation and health safety tests.

The first thing you notice about Fromm’s food is its incredibly bespoke, individualized recipes that almost sound like food you’d wanna eat. From Beef Frittata Veg to Chicken a la Veg and more, Fromm’s recipes provide a veritable feast for your dog, with recipes specially formulated for dogs of all sizes, ages and levels of activity. Also, not to judge a book by its cover, but its packaging is absolutely gorgeous, with sleek black backgrounds and bright colors that allow you to easily differentiate which kind of canine cuisine you’re feeding your best friend.

While Fromm’s principles are all well and good, how is the food itself? Luckily, having taken a close look at its Gold Adult brand of dog food, Fromm’s products are not that bad either. The most important ingredient found in Fromm Gold Adult Dry Dog Food is duck, which is extremely high quality; chicken meal and chicken are also added to this particular formula, as well as menhaden fish meal and lamb, offering more lean, quality meat to your dog’s diet.

In addition to Fromm’s meat content, its use of grains and vegetables are nothing to sneeze at. Complex carbohydrates in this product come from brown rice, barley and oatmeal which, while not the most nutritious stuff in the world, offers easier digestion and higher fiber content for Fromm’s products (the fiber content for this particular food is 3.9%).

Candidae vs Fromm

Overall, according to Dog Food Advisor, Fromm Dog Food is rated above-average, with approximately 48% carbohydrates 28% protein, 16% fat and a fat to protein ratio of around 59%. Fromm’s products are a great alternative to most standard dog foods, though there are better products on the market with a higher protein ratio and greater amounts of meat in the kibble.

Overall, Fromm Dog Food has good principles behind it, and a good-but-not-remarkable amount of meat in their products. If you can deal with slightly more rice and grains in your dog food than in some of the most high-quality stuff, Fromm might just hit the spot.

Analysis of Candidae Dog Food

Now we take a look at another small company, Canidae Pet Food. One of the few truly independent companies making pet food, Canidae is another family-owned company based out of Brownwood, Texas, making all of their high-quality pet foods in house. Like Fromm and other companies of its type, Canidae’s mission statement is to make the highest-quality pet foods with a higher percentage of meat than most lower-quality dog food.

Judging Canidae by the same standards as Fromm, the two are largely comparable in terms of sheer dog food quality, with a few differences. For this review, we took a look at Canidae’s Life States All Life Stages Formula, which was the most all-purpose dog food product in their line we could find.

Looking at the nutrition facts, the top five ingredients are chicken meal, turkey meal, lamb meal, brown rice and white rice. At first blush, that is not too bad – those meats are all lean and full of good fats and nutrients. Even the brown rice is not bad, as whole-grain rice products are better than most. However, the presence of the white rice is not a fantastic sign, as it does not offer much nutritional value to your dog. This food also includes some other fillers like tomato pomace and sun-cured alfalfa meal, the latter of which is often associated with horse feeds; these aren’t bad for your dog, but they don’t offer much in the way of nutrition either.

The citing of brown rice, white rice and rice bran in the ingredients list is indicative of a worrisome trend in dog foods, unfortunately – ingredient splitting. Ingredient splitting occurs when manufacturers break down one larger ingredient into smaller ingredients to put them lower on the ingredients list. According to Dog Food Advisor, the amount of brown rice white rice and rice bran in this particular dog food is likely enough to eclipse the meat products in the recipe, making rice the biggest ingredient, not meat.

All is not lost, however, as Canidae Dog Food still has quite a bit to offer. Peas, potato and oatmeal are incredibly healthy for dogs, as peas offer a great deal of natural fiber and good carbohydrates, and oatmeal is a great source of vitamin B and dietary fiber. While the potatoes don’t offer much in the way of positive carbohydrate sources, they are still an acceptable filler for the food itself. The use of sunflower oil, flaxseed meal, and the prebiotic inulin also provide some fringe benefits like greater soluble dietary fiber and omega-6 fatty acids.

The Verdict?

Looking at both Fromm and Canidae Dog Food brands, the clear winner is Fromm through its slightly higher dedication to more high-quality meat content in its food. Canidae’s products are still perfectly fine for dogs, but the presence of white rice and the use of ingredient splitting give us slightly more pause than we might normally have. Both indie companies have their hearts in the right place, however, and offer good, healthy solutions for your dog’s nutrition.
