Detailed Addiction Dog Food Review, Rating, and Analysis

Addiction dog food is created by pet food manufacturer Addiction Foods. This Singaporean-owned company is manufactured in New Zealand. The brand was established in 2002 when the founder, a veterinary surgeon, noticed how low-quality many pet foods on the market truly were.

Why New Zealand?

Considering that Addiction is a Singaporean-owned company, you may wonder why they are manufactured in New Zealand. New Zealand is a great location to get organic meats and ingredients, and it is also an area where a lot of food manufacturing happens. This means that experienced workers and high-quality ingredients are all readily available.

Addiction Dog Food Reviews

Here’s what you’ve been waiting for: my Addiction dog food review! I’m happy to give this relatively new brand a 4-star rating. They put your pet’s health at the forefront of their practices, and I believe they are a reliable brand to purchase. Let’s break down the pros and cons of feeding this brand.

Pros

Clean, Reliable Manufacturing

Addiction dog food is being manufactured in Te Puke, New Zealand. They can source incredibly high-quality ingredients while working with experienced food production workers in an area where food production facilities are common. Organic, high-quality ingredients are readily available, and I think that’s part of why Addiction pet foods are so great.

Raw, Dehydrated Food Available

Addiction dog food reviews often mention that they love the high protein levels and the flexibility of raw, dehydrated dog food that is available from Addiction. This food can be used in a variety ways for your pets and adds great variety to their diet:

Very Few Controversial Ingredients

While looking through the majority of their foods, you will see that Addiction dog food formulas contain very few questionable ingredients. This is because the founder created the food to avoid by-products and low-quality ingredients, leading to a great final product.

Cons

Protein To Fat To Carb Ratios

Some reviews mention being dissatisfied with the high amount of carbohydrates, even if they are grain-free, in the foods. The fat level of some formulas in the Addiction line is lower than recommended, and the carb levels are higher. This means that your dog might not be able to process the food as well. Take note of the specific percentages when choosing food from Addiction.

Discrepancies Between Formulas

This could have been a 5-star brand, but every formula in their line has major differences that forced me to lower the rating. Some formulas have chelated minerals; some do not. Some are completely grain-free; some are not. Overall, you have to consider the specific formula you want to feed before buying, and that can be frustrating to people who want to simply love one brand.

Addiction Dog Food Reviews of Ingredients

Today we will analyze the most popular dry food from Addiction, the Addiction Grain-Free Viva La Venison Dry Dog Food.

  • Crude Protein (min) 26%
  • Crude Fat (min) 14%
  • Crude Fiber (max) 3.5%
  • Moisture (max) 10%

The main source of animal protein in this food is from venison meal, which is a concentrated version of venison that has a much higher concentration of protein than fresh venison would have. The primary fat source is named chicken fat, which is a great ingredient and a great source of fat.

The carbohydrates come from peas and dried potatoes, both of which are good, grain-free carbohydrate options. However, they both have relatively high protein concentrations which can change the final protein makeup of the food.

The fiber in the food comes from both apples and cranberries, which are good natural sources of fiber that will help with your dog’s digestion. The food also has probiotics added to aid digestion as well, which is a big plus.

My only real problems with the food are the inclusion of brewer’s yeast (a controversial ingredient that I don’t believe is necessary) and the balance of fats to proteins to carbohydrates. When you break down the exact composition of the food, you’ll see that the carbohydrate level is quite high, and I wish there were a bit more animal fat or protein to balance this out.

Still, this is an above-average food that I highly recommend to any dog lovers!

Addiction Dog Food Recall History

There have not been any Addiction dog food recall issues in the last two years.

However, there was a voluntary Addiction dog food recall issued by the company in early 2016. This was because there were elevated levels of Vitamin A. While this was not harmful to pets, Addiction offered a voluntary recall because they felt the food did not meet their standards.

It’s great to see that Addiction Foods cares about standing out above common pet foods.

Final Thoughts

Have you decided how you feel about this food after my review? I hope it’s helped you to come to a conclusion about whether or not this food is right for your pet. Remember to consider which formula you choose carefully, but be assured that every product in this line is made of healthy ingredients.
