Horizon Pulsar Dog Food Reviews, Recalls, and Ingredients

Pulsar dog food is one of the lines of food that is made by Horizon. They also make the Legacy, Complete, and Amicus lines, but I’ll be focusing on the pros and cons of Pulsar through this review. Pulsar is marketed as a grain-free, affordable food, and it comes in three different varieties.

Horizon is a Canadian company that aims to work with regional agriculture to make their products. This means that Horizon cares about quality with its ingredients. Their mission, according to their website, is to create authentic, regional, and affordable food from their home base. They self-manufacture all of their food rather than sending their food to be packed by a third-party.

        Horizon Pulsar Dog Food Reviews

Horizon Pulsar is a fantastic brand, and I’m so happy to be reviewing them today. While every line from Horizon has its benefits, I believe that Pulsar is a great, affordable choice for many dog owners, which is part of why I’m putting together this review. Let’s get into it already!

        Pros

Produced With Community and Good Ethics

While this isn’t specific to the food itself, I was so happy to see that so many Pulsar dog food reviews mentioned that they love the people behind the company. Faceless corporations of dog food companies might make good food, but there’s something wonderful about finding a good food from a family-owned company like Horizon. They care, and that’s why I care about them.

        Locally Sourced Ingredients

So many dog food companies are falling prey to changing markets and being forced to import some of their ingredients from unreliable sellers. This has not (and according to them, will not!) happened to Horizon. Their ingredients are sourced locally and from agriculturists that verify what they are creating. You can feel good about what’s in your dog’s food.

        Cooked At Lower Temperatures

Something that I don’t talk about often but is important in a dog food is the temperature that it is prepared at. Many kibbles are rapidly cooked at high temperatures which can burn away good nutrients. Horizon knows this, so they use a lower-temperature cooking process to do their best to retain as many nutrients as possible during the manufacturing process.

        Cons

        Smells Strongly

While I don’t think this is a big problem, some pet owners who use foods from this line believe that the smell is too strong. I take this as a sign that it’s fresher than the foods they are used to, but I can see how this can be a con for some people, which is why I include it here.

        High Fiber

Some dog owners experienced an increase in the number of bowel movements and the amount of stool that their dog passed every day after switching to this food. I wasn’t able to verify the amount of food they were feeding them (they may have needed to decrease the amount), but I also suspect that the high amount of fiber in the foods may be the culprit.

Horizon Pulsar Dog Food Reviews of Ingredients

It’s time to do a deeper analysis of one of the foods from Horizon Pulsar to get a better idea of what this food is really like. Let’s analyze the Horizon Pulsar Pulses & Fish Formula, which is possibly the most popular food from the line.

        • Crude Protein (min) 28%
        • Crude Fat (min) 15%
        • Crude Fiber (max) 5%
        • Moisture (max) 9%

The protein in this food comes from salmon meal (the first ingredient), fresh salmon (lower on the list) and some plant-based protein sources like lentils. Salmon is a great protein source that has many omega fatty acids in it, so I love seeing a fish formula that uses mostly salmon. Salmon oil is added which only boosts the omegas even more.

It’s worth noting here that while the food smells fishy, it’s not so fishy that you won’t want to serve it to your dogs in the house. Some foods have a smell that really lingers, but this food does not seem to do so.

As a grain-free food, the carbohydrates in the food comes from peas and lentils, both of which are good sources of carbohydrates for dogs. Pea starch is also added, but this is used as a gelatin forming item rather than as a source of carbohydrates.

This food also has an added prebiotic and chelated minerals. Both of these are common in high-quality kibble foods, and they should help your dog get more nutrients and digest their food better. All good dog foods should have at least some prebiotics or probiotics to help digestion, so I'm really happy to see that ingredient here.

I love this food and highly recommend it. Looking at the ingredients and nutrients involved, I am sure that this food is an above-average choice that your dog will love to eat.

Horizon Pulsar Dog Food Recall History

There has not been a Horizon Pulsar dog food recall in the past two years. In fact, I didn’t find any recall information ever for a Pulsar product, which is a plus for this brand. I can tell that they care about the safety of their food for your pets, and that is great to see.

        Final Thoughts

I’ve made my decision about Horizon Pulsar dog food, and the decisions is that I thin it’s a fantastic food for many dogs that comes in a variety of flavors that you pet might love. Horizon Pulsar dog food reviews show that people (and pets!) love this food:

And I do, too! You can see how much Horizon cares about creating a high-quality food for your dog just by reading their mission statements, and I am fully with this brand. When you want a food that is affordable but is also high-quality, the Horizon Pulsar line should definitely be an option that makes your short list.
