It was co-founded by Nishes Shrestha and Suman Shrestha in 2007 after they noticed a dog chewing on Himalayan hard cheese back in 2003 and then went on to research if it would be okay for dogs to enjoy this kind of treat. Spoiler alert: it is! The company continues to grow and now distributes to many different retailers after beginning in the Shrestha kitchen.

A fun part of Himalayan Dog Chews is that they are made with yak milk sourced from 4,000 traditional farmers in the Himalayas. Himalayan chews reviews found online are mostly positive. But when I’m deciding whether or not there are Himalayan dog chews good for my dog, I like to look beyond other people’s reviews and do my own research.
And my research told me that these dog chews can be great for dogs! I recommend these chews for pets because dogs love them, they’re good for your pets, and they’re interesting.
Pros
Because these treats are harder and have a different makeup than pig ears or other chew treats, they last much longer for many dogs. This will, of course, depend on the dog’s strength and size, but they are definitely more long lasting than some other natural chew alternatives. This is great because they are a bit more expensive, so you want to be sure they will last.
The smell of these chews is another big benefit. Some pet owners really hate the smell of other chews such as pig ears because of how they smell while being chewed, but that is not a problem with these chews. These smell like smoked cheese while being chewed.
These are also a clean chew. Some chews leave behind stains or other hard to clean up messes. Any residue left behind after your dog chews on these snacks can be easily wiped up, and they are non-staining, so you will not need to worry about where your dog does their chewing.
They also come in all different sizes, from small to extra-large, so no matter what size your dog is, they will be able to have a size that they won’t go through too quickly.
Cons
One thing that concerns some pet owners about these chews is that they can be a choking hazard once they are chewed down, but that is the same for many dog chews. The nice thing about this food in regards to that hazard is that you are meant to microwave the small pieces, so they become like a puff. Then, they can be chewed and crumble easily. So I don’t think this is a big concern.
Other people are concerned that these foods are made by different farmers and co-ops in Nepal and other Himalayan regions, but that should not be a concern, either. The chews are tested and distributed in the US. They are tested for bacterial growth as well as for the potential for growth and, to date, have not shown negative results.
Another con on these is the price. If you are looking for the cheapest dog chew out there, this is not the chew for you. They are more reasonably priced if you can get them in bulk or on sale.

It might sound weird to feed your dog a milk-based product since milk can be hard to digest for dogs, but that is not the case with these chews. Once it is turned into cheese, milk can be digested. In fact, the company found that only about 10% of pets had problems digesting this food and resulting gas or loose stool went away quickly.

There are only four ingredients in this food: Yak and Cow Milk, Salt, Lime Juice. The chews are made through fair trade co-ops by farmers and manufacturers in Nepal. The cows and yaks that create the milk graze in open fields or on fresh grass. They have no added hormones, antibiotics or other chemicals, which means you’re getting quality milk from them.

Are Himalayan dog chews safe? FDA recalls say yes. There has never been a recall issued for these treats, so I believe that there are Himalayan dog chews good for my dog out there.
They also only sell the top 75% of quality products as dog treats outside of Kathmandu. The rest are third-party tested by Washington State University, Oklahoma State University, Midwest Laboratories, and Edge Laboratories.

To wrap up this Himalayan Dog Chew review, I would like to say that I highly recommend this product. This chew will keep your dog busy without any effect on their diet or health. The chew is also clean, non-staining, and has a good smell to it, unlike some smelly dog chews. I really don’t have any qualms about recommending this chew besides the price, and even that is not too expensive if you consider the quality of the treat and how it is made.
