Purina Pro Plan Reviews (Ratings, Recalls, Ingredients!)
About the Company
Purina has led the dog food business for about a decade. Its Pro Plan brand is the top-of-the-line brand for Purina, blending over 85 years of research with recommendations by over 400 scientists and vets. In addition, Pro Plan was the first dog food brand to ever use real meat as the first ingredient.
Pro Plan prides itself on its vast variety of formulas to target any dietary need. The brand features everything from grain-free formulas to sport performance formulas. Pro Plan is the dog food many show handlers trust the most, with 96 out of 100 winning dogs on a Pro Plan diet. Perhaps with so much variation, the unique formulas can benefit dogs of all ages, size, and performance levels.
Purina Pro Plan comes in 5 major varieties, with different formulas in each: Savor, Focus, Sport, Natural, and Bright Mind.

Rating
If you're considering Purina Pro Plan dog food, you'll want to know "Is Purina Pro Plan a good dog food?". So, I took to Purina Pro Plan dog food reviews to help me answer the question. This Purina Pro Plan review provides my thoughts combined with real customer reviews.
Overall, I am pleased with Purina Pro Plan. Some of the Purina brands are not ones that I'd recommend, particularly the lower-budget foods. They tend to use fillers for proteins rather than real meat proteins. Instead, Purina Pro Plan focuses on real meat as the first ingredient listed, which I'm definitely on board with. For example, here is a commercial from Purina Pro Plan explaining its Bright Mind Adult 7+ variety:
Pros
Purina Pro Plan is one of the best brands of Purina dog food. It is on the higher end of cost, but I believe it's worth it. I love that it has so much variety within the brand. There truly is a dog food for any dog, regardless of his life stage or diet. From small puppies to large sport breeds, and everything in between, Purina Pro Plan made sure that all dogs can benefit from its foods. You can even use the Pro Plan website to get an expert recommendation for the type of Purina Pro Plan formula best for your dog.
Additionally, I'm impressed with its ingredients. This is a brand that stays true to its word. It promises real meat ingredients, veterinarian-recommended diets, and no artificial colors or flavors. Fortunately, it delivers on all of these points, and more.
Cons
Purina Pro Plan reviews tend to be very mixed. Like other Purina brands, customers say that there seems to be problems with manufacturing. For example, many complain of bugs or hazardous materials ending up in their dog food bags. This is a complaint common with Purina dog food in general, not specifically Purina Pro Plan. However, I feel that it's important enough to mention here because there are instances of Purina Pro Plan foods being affected.
Purina Reviews of Ingredients
I'll be breaking down the Purina Pro Plan Natural Plus Essential Vitamins and Minerals - Adult Grain-Free Lamb & Egg Formula. It is one of the most popular Purina Pro Plan dog food varieties because of its grain-free contents. Here is its Guaranteed Analysis:
- Crude Protein (min) 26.0%
- Crude Fat (min) 16.0%
- Crude Fiber (max) 7.5%
- Moisture (max) 12.0%
- Linoleic Acid (min) 1.0%

For owners who choose a grain-free diet for their dogs, this is one you can't really go wrong with. Many customers who choose this diet do so for their dogs with allergies to grains.
With lamb and chicken meal as the first two ingredients, your dog is sure to get plenty of protein. This is evident in the protein content of the Guaranteed Analysis. But, also take a look at the fiber. Many grains provide high fiber content. This is grain-free, and still has an excellent amount of fiber, which is important for your dog's digestive system. I'd go so far as to say these nutrients and ingredients in this variety are commendable.
I took a look at one of the Purina Pro Plan puppy foods to see how they match up. Again, I see real meat as the main source of protein, which is especially important for a puppy. Purina Pro Plan puppy food reviews generally agree that its healthy for pups and aids in the transition to adult Pro Plan formulas.
Purina Dog Food Recall History
There is no history of a dog food recall for Purina Pro Plan in the last two years according to the FDA and Purina Pro Plan dog food reviews.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I think Purina Pro Plan is an excellent choice for your dog. Not only will you find the perfect formula out of over 30 varieties, but your dog can benefit from great flavors and real ingredients. In addition to my research, I also took into consideration real customer reviews. These are very important in getting a full view of a dog food because they're based on real experiences.
Although most reviewers ranked Pro Plan as an excellent dog food they'd recommend, some experienced issues with objects or bugs in their bags. For this reason, I had to rate Purina Pro Plan lower than perfect. If I were to judge on nutrients and ingredients alone, though, it would have easily been a highly-rated dog food. Still, I would recommend Purina Pro Plan for dogs of all breeds and dietary needs.
You are being way too kind to this brand. My GSP puppy was started at the breeder because ants would not attack it as they would with brands containing higher and better meat content. My dog had soft runny stools occasion and showed limited interest in eating it except as a last resort when really starving. I switched him to a competitive brand and the results were very favorable. I have a large leftover bag of pro plan chicken puppy food that will be used as fish food or will go in the trash. I cant get my prized GDP off this junk soon enough. Throw in the trash One star
