Trupanion Reviews: Coverages and Costs (Updated 2020)

Your dog is an important part of the family. Dog insurance is an important part of keeping him happy and healthy. It can also save you a significant amount of money on medical bills throughout his life.

Of course, the money you save and the care he receives depends on the quality of health insurance you have. Trupanion is one of the leaders in dog insurance, providing one comprehensive plan that covers your puppy or dog for his lifetime.

Trupanion was founded in 2000 in Canada, and was previously known as Vetinsurance. By 2004, Trupanion became the most profitable pet insurance provider in North America, and has since expanded to Puerto Rico.

Trupanion Reviews

There’s no doubt that Trupanion is one of the most popular companies for pet insurance. With one simple plan, it provides some of the easiest coverage options you can find. There’s no picking and choosing, aside from your deductible amount. All breeds and ages are covered the same, which makes it super simple for dog owners.

Still, there are a few things left to be desired with Trupanion. Although it has an A+ rating with the BBB, there are also a lot of Trupanion pet insurance complaints.

Pros

One Simple Policy

One of the benefits made evident by Trupanion pet insurance reviews is its easy-to-understand policy. Many other companies have a few policy options to choose from with different coverage levels. However, Trupanion makes it simple by covering all dogs under the same, simple policy.

This policy provides coverage for most high-cost medical services you’d run into during your dog’s lifetime. For example, hospitalizations, surgeries, and prescriptions will be reimbursed for covered conditions. The plan comes with a 90% reimbursement, so you’ll get most of your money back from covered medical services.

Covers All Ages For A Lifetime

Puppies and adult dogs can benefit from a Trupanion insurance plan. As long as you open a policy for your dog before his 18th birthday, he will be covered for a lifetime. That means that, even if he lives to be 20 years old, you’ll receive the same coverage for him as you would a 6 month old puppy!

You Choose Your Deductible

Trupanion provides a few deductible options for you to help keep your monthly premiums within your budget. You can choose different deductibles per condition, if you desire, or keep them all the same, between $0 and $1,000. You can also lower or raise your deductible by contacting Trupanion.

Has Extra Coverage Available

The Pet Owner Assistance Package helps give you some extra peace of mind if you choose to add it as an additional coverage. You’ll receive reimbursement for property damage from your pet, boarding fees, trip cancellations involving your pet, and more. Think of it as an added cushion in case you have unexpected situations arise.

Cons

No Coverage For Certain Medical Services And Conditions

Your Trupanion insurance policy will not cover routine care or preventative treatments, like dental care or vet exams. You also won’t receive reimbursement for pre-existing conditions that existed within 18 months of opening your policy. Before you enroll, talk to a representative to ensure that Trupanion will cover what you need it to.

Premiums Can Raise Through Your Policy Lifetime

Trupanion does state on its website that your policy premiums are subject to change. This amount may rise or drop, and is dependent on average costs of medical care for pets similar to yours, veterinary inflation, and increases in veterinary technology. Additionally, some customers have noted significant increases to their premiums during the life of their policies.

Trupanion Insurance Reviews Mention Denied Claims

I read through several Trupanion pet insurance reviews, and became concerned with what seems to be a recurring theme. Several customers complained about having their claims denied for what Trupanion says are pre-existing conditions. However, dog owners counter that their dogs’ conditions were unexpected illnesses, not pre-existing. This is definitely a concern, although I have no way to validate their claims.

Dog Insurance From Trupanion

Trupanion is a little different than other dog insurance companies. It provides, perhaps, one of the most simple ways to cover your dog or puppy with its one, simple, comprehensive plan.

Whereas other insurance companies usually have a few policy options to choose from, Trupanion relies on a minimalistic approach. Its one plan will cover all dogs, from puppies to adults, under the same conditions.

Your covered medical services will be 90% reimbursed. The policy covers high-cost medical care, like surgeries, hospital stays, diagnostic tests, medications, and more. You will not, however, receive reimbursement for vet exam fees, wellness or preventative care, or pre-existing conditions.

You can choose your deductible to help the policy fit within your monthly budget. Trupanion recommends choosing a lower deductible for puppies, who may require more emergency care than older dogs. Your dog up to 14 years old can get a Trupanion insurance policy, and he will be covered for a lifetime.

Additionally, Trupanion offers a Pet Owner Assistance Package as optional coverage. This includes:

    • Third-party property damage caused by your pet
    • Trip cancellation costs related to an ill or injured pet
    • Boarding fees if an emergency arises
    • Advertising and reward costs for a lost pet
    • Cremation and burial costs for your pet, if the death was cause by an accident

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m pleased with Trupanion's simple, comprehensive policy. The company makes the insurance process easy and headache-free, which I think is important for dog owners. Plus, there are definitely many positive customer reviews of the company that lead me to believe it is a trusted company.

However, I also have to take into account the Trupanion pet insurance complaints that mention claim denial. It’s always a concern for dog owners that their claims will be denied after they’ve paid their high-cost vet bills. Although I can’t confirm these complaints, I think they’re worthwhile to mention here, since many customers have had similar problems.
