About the Company
In 2008, Holistic Select Natural Pet Food, combined with Wellness Natural Pet Food, Eagle Pack Natural Pet Food, and Old Mother Hubbard Natural Dog Snacks to form WellPet LLC. They're a privately held subsidiary of the Berwind Corporation, with their main office in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. They also have a dog food factory in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Holistic Select’s main drive is to give our pets natural nutrition to support their digestive health. Their pet products include pre and probiotics, natural fiber, digestive enzymes and botanicals, as well as healthy herbs. Together, that makes for a balanced diet that is specific to our dog's health needs, size and age.
Dry Food
The Whole Dog Journal awarded Holistic Select top honors in their annual, February Approved Dry Dog Food Review in 2015 and 2010. Some products like the Turkey & Lentils Dry Dog Food use peas, lentils and chickpeas. That keeps these recipes grain-free and these kind of carbohydrates give the pet food a low glycemic index. That should keep our dog's blood sugar steady and to a healthy range.
Other Holistic Select Natural Pet Foods, like the Grain-Free Adult Large and the Giant Breed Dry Dog Recipe also have added Glucosamine, for healthy hips and joints. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are in some pet products too, for the brain and eyes.
Canned Food
Canned Holistic Select Dog Food has no grains, like wheat, soy or corn. Like the dry food, there aren’t any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives either. It’s complete and balanced food. You can use it alone or mix it with dry dog food.

Is Holistic Dog Food Good?
I think Holistic Select dog food ingredients are trustworthy because they’re checked through detailed sourcing and nutritional tests, along with the company's manufacturing procedures. They even handle the shipping and delivery carefully, insuring that the quality of their products is never compromised in any way at each stage. That explains why majority of Holistic Dog Food Reviews are positive.
Pros
Named meat, meat meal, organs and multiple protein sources are the first or main ingredients in all their pet products. The company focuses on natural nutrition, without artificial colors or dyes.
Multiple protein sources give our dogs different amino acid profiles. That supports their general health and helps them build and maintain lean muscle mass.
Pets with allergies to a particular protein, however, need a single, named meat in their food, so their owner can avoid whatever the problem is. Holistic Select also has recipes to meet their needs.
The protein, fiber and moisture in all Holistic Select pet products follow the maximum claims set by AAFCO. Fat, on the other hand is always kept to the minimum claim, which is just what I want to see. Because the balance is the same across the pet food line, they are ideal for a rotation diet too.
I was happy to hear about Holistic Select’s Quality Assurance Program too, which even goes beyond the standards for pet food set out by The Food and Drug Administration and The Association of American Feed Control Officials. All their suppliers must use the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) program to ensure food safety and quality during manufacturing all the way to the final product.
Holistic Select also uses only natural preservatives, such as a combination of mixed tocopherols, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. They not only keep the food fresh, they also add antioxidants to protect our dogs from free-radicals and cell damage.
Cons
As with all premium pet foods, the price is going to be more expensive than with cheaper dog foods. As long the company makes their products in a safe and nutritious way, with quality ingredients, I don’t mind payingmore though.
I couldn't find where the ingredients come from or if everything is made in the US. I’d like reassurance that nothing comes from China or other places that don’t have safe food practices.

That’s why their pet products contain special ingredients for prebiotic support and natural fiber, as well as botanicals like pumpkin, papaya and pomegranate. Along with the included probiotics and digestive enzymes, they’ll help our dogs absorb and use all the nutrients in the food.
They even use herbs like cinnamon, fennel and peppermint because they support a calm and balanced digestive system, according to Dr. Al Townshend, the Holistic Select Staff Veterinarian.

There hasn’t been a Holistic Select dog food recall in the last two years.
Final Thoughts
The only concerns I have with these pet products are that I can’t find answers to all my questions about where everything is made or where the ingredients come from. Their Quality Assurance Program, and the lack of recalls, however, make me fairly confident the ingredients are good.
Their adherence to the maximum AAFCO claims for protein, fiber and moisture, but the minimum for fat are perfect. It’s natural, dog food with the right amount of meat. Their pet products balance everything our dogs need and provide digestible nutrition, without artificial ingredients.
