beneful dog food reviews

Many people do not know who makes Beneful dog food. It’s actually their parent company, Purina. Purina makes many dog foods, including Purina Beneful dog food, Purina One, Purina dog food, Beggin Strips, and other products. Since their products have come under fire in recent years, Purina has been pushing the fact that they are a safe company with high manufacturing standards and quality ingredients.

Beneful Dog Food Reviews

I’m not one to follow fads, but I, unfortunately, have to follow in the belief that Purina Beneful ingredients are not very good for dogs, which is why my rating is low. I do believe, however, that Purina is working hard to improve the products it is delivering, which is why they deserve a 2.5-star rating rather than a 1-star rating.

Is Beneful Dog Food Safe?

This is a concern that many owners have because of reports that Beneful dog food was killing dogs because of bad ingredients that led to a health problems. Since it’s hard to tell if these dog food reviews are true or not, which is why I’m writing this analysis.

Chris, in the video below, is one of the employees at Purina who buys the ingredients:

Pros

Commitment To Safety

After a stream of bad reviews that led to many people believing that Beneful is bad for dogs, the Beneful brand began to emphasize the safety of their food. They have improved manufacturing practices, and they regularly test to ensure that their food meets AACPO standards. Their food has not faced any recalls in the last few years.

Affordable & Available

There is something to be said for convenience when it comes to dog food, especially for pet owners on a budget. Purina Beneful is commonly found in chain stores and grocery stores for a low price. your very helpful for many owners.

Cons

Huge Amount Of Backlash

In the past few years, there have been an enormous number of Beneful reviews that point to the food causing massive problems like growths and tumors. I’m hesitant to believe the hype, but there have been so many cases that it’s clear to me that something about this food is causing a lot of problems in a lot of dogs. And that makes me uneasy.

Too Many By-products And Grains

This ingredients list for the Beneful dog food will be further analyzed below, but the bottom line is that it contains too many corn, soy, and other filler grains. While not proven dangerous for your dog, they are also not good for your dog and provide no real source of nutrition to them.

Other Unnecessary Ingredients

This food has artificial coloring, poultry and pork digest, and menadione, all of which seem unnecessary. On top of that, it lacks any probiotic, meaning that this food is just going to slowly move through the system without any help to digest better.

Beneful Reviews of Ingredients

Are these foods made with quality products? Let’s take a look at the Purina Beneful ingredients in the IncrediBites for Small Dogs with Real Beef Dry Dog Food formula.

  • Crude Protein (min) 27%
  • Crude Fat (min) 13.5%
  • Crude Fiber (max) 4%
  • Moisture (max) 14%

The general analysis doesn’t look too bad on this food. The fat level is a little lower than necessary, and I am curious about the meat sources, but none of the percentages are alarming.

The primary source of protein is real beef, which is great, but the rest of the protein sources are not-so-great. Chicken by-product meal is the next protein source. While this meal contains many nutritious amino acids, it also can contain any chicken parts and is an inexpensive, cheap filler ingredient.

In addition to low-quality supplemental protein sources, the carbohydrate sources in this food are entirely corn, soy, or grain based. The second ingredient in this food is corn. Corn does not give much nutrition to your dog, and neither is barley, which is the next ingredient on the list.

Beneful Dog Food Review

All in all, this food only contains mid-to-low quality ingredients after the first component, real beef. It’s very disappointing to see such a large number of low-quality or non-nutritious foods in a popular dog food. It is a below average food.

Beneful Dog Food Recall History

There have been no official recalls issued for this product line in the past two years. However, there have been many complaints issued on sites like Consumer Affairs about the food. There have also been voluntary recalls issued by Purina earlier this year.

Final Thoughts

I know it can be difficult considering how scary some of the reviews of this dog food make it sound. I stand by the 2.5-star rating that I am giving Beneful today. I simply am not convinced that this food is good for dogs. The ingredients are of average quality, and there are better options out there.

Instead, I would recommend feeding your dog a better affordable option, such as the Rachael Ray Nutrish or Organix dog food lines. Both of these foods are affordable to most dog owners and provide a line up of ingredients that are good for your dog without the large number of byproducts and fillers Beneful contains.

I hope that these great alternative options help you find a good food for you dog.
