Pet Insurance For Dog With A Pre Existing Condition (Top 5)

Did you know that it's nearly impossible to find pet insurance for a dog with a pre existing condition? Unfortunately, this is a true statement. As much as I research, there’s simply not any companies that will cover all pre-existing conditions. Wondering why? Let’s dig into it.

A pre-existing condition is typically defined as a condition that you or a vet noticed as a problem with your pet before your pet insurance coverage started. For instance, if your dog has a liver infection and then you purchase pet insurance, treatment for the liver infection will not be covered.

If, however, the infection heals and is gone for years before it happens again, it would then be covered with under some insurance companies. Not all companies will cover chronic conditions like this, however, so you need to be careful what you purchase. Even if companies do not cover the cost of treatment for a pre-existing condition, they will still insure your dog for other problems.

What Is the Best Pet Insurance for Dogs with Pre Existing Condition?

Best Pet Insurance for Dogs with Pre Existing Condition

1. Petplan

The first plan I want to mention is Petplan. This pet insurance would cover hereditary or genetic illnesses even if your pet showed symptoms before you enrolled. This is very rare to see from a pet insurance company, and for that reason, I love their policies.

While they’re still not a dog insurance that covers pre existing conditions completely, they do cover curable pre-existing conditions. So, if your dog has an ear infection when you enroll, that treatment will not be covered. If your dog gets an ear infection again a year later, it will be covered.

Everything that Petplan covers is included in the standard plans; there is no need to pay extra for a wellness add-on plan that is often needed to deal with hereditary or pre-existing conditions with other pet insurance companies. It’s all there already which is great. Plans for most pets average out to be around $40 per month, which is great for the coverage that you’d receive in return.

2. Pets Best

The next brand I’d like to mention as a good pet insurance for a dog with a pre existing condition is Pets Best. While they (like all pet insurance companies) do not cover pre-existing conditions, they do cover hereditary and congenital conditions. This means that some types of pre-existing conditions that are hereditary are covered.

They also offer two levels of wellness add-on plans that can be used to help offset the cost of long-term or chronic conditions your pet is already suffering from. Depending on the particular condition, your vet visits or medications used to treat the conditions may be covered. You’ll have to check about your pet’s specific condition, but it’s very possible.

Pets Best usually costs between $20 and $60 per month depending on the level of care you select and whether or not you add on the wellness plan support.

3. Healthy Paws

Another dog insurance for pre-existing conditions is Healthy Paws. Again, they do not cover incurable pre-existing conditions, as no pet insurance company does.

They do, however, cover chronic and hereditary conditions in some cases. The best way to find out if your dog’s pre-existing condition would qualify for coverage would be to call their incredibly helpful customer service! They’ll break down exactly what will and what won’t be covered for you.

Need an Alternative? Try Healthypaws Pet Insurance:

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and Foundation.

I also really love Healthy paws because while they have an annual deductible, they don’t make you choose an annual maximum benefit cap. This means that if your dog gets a serious illness and has very high medical costs, those will continue to be covered no matter how high they get!

4. Embrace

Embrace is very upfront about the fact that they are not a pre existing condition dog insurance any more than their competitors:

What they do offer, however, is coverage of curable conditions. Some pet insurance companies will never cover ear infections if your dog ever had one. This is not the case with Embrace. As long as your dog is symptom-free for 6 to 12 months (depending on the condition), treatment for that condition will be covered if it happens again.

Embrace offers routine wellness plans that you can also use to offset the regular care costs for your dog. Besides that, Embrace is relatively affordable. Most plans range from $30 to $70, but there are a lot of customizable options that you can adjust to fit your budget.

Insure Early To Avoid The Pre-Existing Condition Problem

It’s not possible to find a dog insurance with pre existing conditions completely covered, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get your pet covered. In fact, you should get all pets insured as soon as they're eligible for enrollment to an insurance company that covers hereditary and genetic conditions.

By doing this, you'll prevent yourself from ever having a claim denied for being a pre-existing condition!

If you already have a pet with a pre-existing condition, don’t worry. Even if it’s not curable, you can choose an insurance with a wellness plan that will help cover regular care costs that you still need to keep up with your pet. Even when a dog already has a chronic condition, insurance can be worth it.

Choose an insurance company that will do their best to provide for your pet’s current condition in some way, and make sure to insure all future pets as early as possible!

None of these companies will cover a dog with a pre existing condition it’s all lies! Our 1yr old puppy was just diagnosed with Addison’s disease and no one will cover anything that pertains to the Addison’s because it happened before we would enroll! But wait they’ll cover anything else other than that that happens in the future.
