Dental Insurance For Dogs: 5 Plans (Routine And Emergency)
Are you looking to get dog insurance with dental coverage in your home? It can be difficult to find dog dental insurance plans and even harder to figure out what type of dental procedures and treatments are covered by a standard accident and illness insurance plan. You’re not the only one who is confused about this.
Standard insurance plans will cover dental problems when they are directly related to the type of coverage you have. If you have accident coverage, dental injury caused by accident will be covered. If you have illness coverage, dental diseases (such as periodontal disease) will typically be covered.
Rather than settle for just an insurance plan that will cover accidental damage, you may also want to add on a wellness or routine care policy. These policies cover annual costs such as exams, dental cleanings, x-rays, and more to help keep your pet healthy year round. Many insurance companies offer these as add-ons to their standard pet insurance plans.
The intricacies of it is complicated, and it can be hard to know exactly what is covered for your pet. Here are the details of plans that can help protect your dog’s teeth.

1. Pet Plan Coverage
Not every dog insurance with dental coverage is created equal, and when it comes to unexpected dental expense coverage, PetPlan offers some of the most comprehensive coverage. Coverage from PetPlan covers treatment for all of the following:
- Periodontal disease
- Fractured and broken teeth
- Tooth extractions due to injury or disease
- Retention of deciduous teeth
- Tooth abscesses
Every level of coverage from PetPlan covers these treatments as long as they were not pre-existing before you started insuring your dog with PetPlan. Should any of these issues arrive, however, you’ll be covered by Pet Plan at an affordable price! Most plans at PetPlan will be under $40 per month, depending on the level of coverage you choose.
2. Pets Best Routine Care Plan
One great option if you’re looking for preventative dental care is the PetsBest Routine Care Plan. The BestWellness Plan covers up to $150 per year towards dental cleaning with no deductibles. This means that you can make sure your pet’s teeth are healthy through professional care without paying out-of-pocket for the dental cleaning.
In additional to routine dental care, the BestWellness plan also gives you funds for routine check-ups, testing, exams, X-rays, vaccinations, deworming, microchips, and more. While you might only be looking for help with dental costs, this plan will provide you with great assistance towards all routine care costs you will have to pay to keep your pet healthy.
3. Embrace Wellness Rewards Plus Coverage
Sometimes, it’s not dental insurance that you need. When you’re hoping to protect your dog’s teeth on a regular basis, you might want to look into a regular care plan like Embrace Wellness Rewards Plus. This is their highest level add-on policy to help cover routine care costs.
Regarding dental coverage, this plan includes anesthetic teeth cleaning and treatment for dental illness. In many ways, it can be compared to the PetsBest BestWellness plan, but it is, in general, more expensive than the plan offered by PetsBest.
This coverage cannot be purchased as a standalone service. It does not cover treatments on a per-item basis, but rather, covers either $250, $450, or $650 in allowances per policy year.
4. AKC Pet Insurance Wellness & Preventative Plans
Again, straight dog dental insurance plans are hard to come by, but AKC Pet Insurance offers Wellness & Preventative plans that include types of dental coverage.
AKC offers you an option when adding on a Wellness Plan. Each policy year, you can either have a pet spayed or you can have a dental cleaning. This allows you the flexibility to choose what you need to keep your pet healthy and prevent them from getting ill.
The Wellness Plans from AKC will bring your pet insurance up to around $50 per month per pet depending on the deductible and coverage level that you choose in your basic insurance plan. You cannot buy the Wellness Plan as a standalone plan.
The final plan I’d like to highlight today is from one of my favorite pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws. Complete Coverage from Healthy Paws covers accidental dental damage because they know how important it is to care for your dog’s teeth in an emergency.
While HealthyPaws only offers accidental dental damage coverage, their insurance coverage is one of the fairest and complete plans that I’ve been able to find in the pet insurance industry. When you have an unexpected dental illness or accident, HealthyPaws customer service will work with you to get you the largest reimbursement possible.
Cover Their Teeth - Cover Their Health
When you get a standard pet insurance plan, you need to remember that it doesn’t cover everything. In fact, it’s common knowledge within the pet insurance industry that certain treatments simply aren’t covered:
Getting dental insurance for dogs along with your pet insurance can be complicated. Thankfully, many plans will cover dental insurance when dental problems arise from an illness or accident, which usually will include reconstructive tooth surgery if necessary.
For those looking to also help prevent dental problems, you can invest in a wellness plan for your dog in addition to (or instead of) an insurance plan. These plans cover routine coverage, including two dental cleanings a year. Whether you go for standard coverage to avoid emergencies or you go for wellness coverage, make sure to protect your pet’s teeth.
