Precise and ANF Brands were purchased by Kodo Inc. from Texas Farm Products Company Ltd. on February 24, 2016. Undoubtedly, Precise's award-winning status made them more attractive.

The American Institute of Baking gave Precise a superior rating for their manufacturing plant, the highest level the AIB awards. They evaluated the company's food safety programs, pest control, operational methods and personnel practices, as well as their maintenance and cleaning practices. The Precise Grain Free pet food line also won Pet Business Magazine’s Industry Recognition Award in 2013.

Precise Dog Food Reviews

Precise Holistic dog food reviews on retail sites are positive, although there aren’t that many of them. My review and rating is primarily based on the quality of the ingredients and how much meat is used, which unfortunately isn’t as high as I’d like.

Carbohydrates dominate these formulas, but at least they're better carbs than many other dog foods. I appreciate that everything is natural too.

Pros

Precise makes all their pet food in the United States with natural, American ingredients or those sourced from New Zealand.

The company has an excellent quality assurance program, with their own on-site laboratory, testing ingredient safety. All the company's pet foods also feature Precise’s Life Circle Essentials, including:

  • Real meat
  • Prebiotics
  • Cell protectors
  • Balanced omegas and fatty acids
  • Herbals
  • Botanicals
  • Natural antioxidants
  • Human-grade supplements

Without corn, wheat, dairy, soy, sorghum, animal by-products, or artificial preservatives like BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin

Cons

Not all of Precise's formulas are grain-free, although they do have a small grain-free line. That option is particularly limited with their canned food though, which is really important for dogs. They need the moisture in wet dog food to prevent chronic, low-level dehydration, which is hard on their organs in the long term. That doesn't mean that real meat and protein are unimportant though.

Precise Product Line

Precise Naturals®
This is the company's original pet food line, with both dry and wet dog food. There has been some improvements to these recipes though too. Special formulas are also made for puppies, seniors and weight management, as well as large and small breeds.

Precise Naturals® Grain Free
These recipes replace grains with low-glycemic garbanzo beans and spring yellow peas.

Precise Holistic Complete®
This line only has dry dog food, with formulas for puppies, adults and seniors, as well as large and small breeds.

Precise Dog Food Reviews of Ingredients

Most Popular Dry Dog Food: Precise Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice Sensicare Formula

Lamb Meal is the first and main ingredient, as a single, concentrated source of protein. It’s particularly good for dogs with a sensitivity to beef. There’s chicken cartilage and chicken fat too. Some dogs are sensitive to poultry, but Precise purifies their chicken fat, removing the chicken protein and all the associated allergens.

Carbohydrates and grains include ground brown rice, oatmeal, rice bran and flaxseed. Listing rice bran separately from the rest of the rice hides how much there actually is in the recipe though, possibly ensuring lamb meal stays as the first ingredient.

There are certainly more carbohydrates here than meat, which might be why they might need extra, natural lamb flavor. There are special supplements in the recipe too, like Yucca Schidilgera extract, to reduce stool odor and chondroitin sulfate for the joints.

  • Crude Protein (min) 22%
  • Crude Fat (min) 12%
  • Crude Fiber (max) 4.5%
  • Moisture (max) 10%
  • 3,562 kcal/kg, 403.8 kcal/cup

Most Popular Grain-Free Dry Dog Food: Precise Naturals Grain-Free, Chicken Formula Adult Dry Dog Food

There is only a moderate level of meat protein in this recipe, from the chicken meal. There's chicken cartilage too. Garbanzo beans and spring yellow peas, add to the meat protein, but at least both have a low glycemic index. They might cause gas though.

Omega fatty acids are balanced from flaxseed, chicken fat and fish oil, for healthy skin and fur. There is Yucca Schidilgera extract in this formula as well, again, with chondroitin sulfate.

  • Crude Protein (min): 26%
  • Crude Fat (min): 16%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 3.5%
  • Moisture (max): 10%
  • 3,750 kcal/kg, 425 kcal/cup

Most Popular Wet Dog Food: Precise Naturals Lamb & Rice Sensicare Formula Canned Dog Food

There is no wheat, corn, soy, beef or poultry protein in this formula, although there is brown rice and oat bran. The first three ingredients are lamb broth, lamb and lamb liver, although the overall protein is still quite low.

  • Crude Protein (min): 7%
  • Crude Fat (min): 5%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 2%
  • Moisture (max): 78%
  • 1,384 kcal/kg, 518 kcal/can

Precise Dog Food Recall History

There has never been a Precise dog food recall or one for any other Texas Farm Products Company products.

Final Thoughts

There isn’t as much meat in these recipes as I want to see. They do use quality ingredients though, and the company has an excellent reputation, even according to other Precise dog food reviews. I hope that continues now that they are owned by a phone company.

Some dogs need more meat and protein than others. It takes a bit of trial and error to find the right product to maintain the healthiest weight and energy level for your dog. I’d usually start with something less dependent on carbohydrates though.

I have fed my dogs Precise for the last 17 years. I recently could only get it at Chewy, but they are no longer carrying it. Where else can I find/orderit? No one around here has it?
